The cultural key
A live legal measure. From Exodus 16:29 ('remain each of you in his place' on the Sabbath) read together with Numbers 35:5, tradition derived a maximum Sabbath walk of two thousand cubits, roughly three quarters of a mile. Whole systems (the eruv) existed to extend it lawfully. Luke, writing to a Gentile, still measures the Mount of Olives in halakhic units.
Recovered meaning
The distance tells you two things: how close Olivet is to the city, and that the first disciples were Sabbath-observant Jews whose very geography was measured by Torah. The church begins inside Judaism, not beside it.
