The cultural key
Tanning meant handling animal carcasses all day: perpetual contact with ritual impurity, plus a legendary stench (tanneries were pushed outside towns, often seaward, and Simon's house is 'by the sea,' 10:6). Rabbinic tradition ranked tanning among the despised trades; the Mishnah even allows a wife to demand divorce if her husband takes it up. For a pious Jew, boarding long-term with a tanner was already a step across the purity map's comfort lines.
Recovered meaning
Luke seats Peter in a tanner's spare room, one rooftop prayer away from the sheet vision. The apostle's scruples are being stretched by his lodgings before heaven says a word about Gentiles: grace often rearranges the guest list before it explains itself.
