The cultural key
Firstfruits (aparche) is liturgy, not just sequence: the first sheaf of the harvest, brought to God before the rest was touched (Leviticus 23:10), functioned as the pledge and guarantee of the whole crop, one offering standing for everything still in the field. The calendar deepens it: the sheaf was waved 'on the day after the Sabbath' after Passover, which in the Gospels' chronology is the very Sunday of the resurrection.
Recovered meaning
Christ risen is not a marvel but a down payment: the first sheaf legally binds the harvest. Paul's whole argument in the chapter hangs on the word: if the firstfruits are raised, the field follows.
