The cultural key
The word is arrabon, straight from commercial paperwork: the earnest money, the down payment that legally binds a contract, forfeited if the buyer walks away. Papyri use it for deposits on land, cattle, a dancing girl's fee; modern Greek still uses the same word for an engagement ring. The seal (sphragis) is the second commercial mark: the stamped impression declaring ownership and authenticity on cargo and documents.
Recovered meaning
The Spirit is God's earnest money on the believer: a first installment of the coming inheritance, paid in a currency (God's own presence) that makes the balance certain. Not a mood of assurance but a binding deposit; Paul repeats the term twice more (5:5; Ephesians 1:14).
