Ancient armies on the march are reported to have been guided by a brazier hoisted on a pole, smoking by day and glowing by night, so the column could follow. The exodus takes that familiar image and makes God Himself the guide at the head of the nation, present without pause around the clock. The same cloud will later settle on the tabernacle and fill it, the visible token of God's presence dwelling in the camp.
Recovered meaning
Israel does not navigate the wilderness by map or scout but by following God's visible presence, unbroken day and night. The pillar that leads them becomes the glory-cloud that will fill the tabernacle at journey's end.
