Ancient covenants were not signed but sealed in blood, binding the parties in a bond as serious as life itself. Moses sprinkles half the blood on the altar (God's side) and half on the people, joining the two in a single covenant. This is the exact ceremony and phrase Jesus invokes at the Last Supper when he lifts the cup and says, 'This is My blood of the covenant, poured out for many', deliberately casting his death as the blood that seals a new covenant.
Recovered meaning
Sinai's covenant is bound in blood sprinkled on both altar and people, God and Israel joined in one solemn bond. Jesus knowingly repeats Moses' words over the cup, making his own blood the seal of a new covenant.
