A riddle-like non-answer to Moses asking for God's name.
The cultural key
Moses asks for a name, expecting something like the titled gods of Egypt. Instead God answers with the verb 'to be': ehyeh asher ehyeh, which can be rendered 'I am who I am,' 'I will be what I will be,' or even 'I cause to be.' From this comes the sacred name YHWH (the Hebrew consonants behind 'the LORD'), so holy it was eventually not spoken aloud. God is not one power among many with a name to invoke; He is the One who simply is, self-existent and present.
Recovered meaning
God will not be reduced to a label that can be managed or summoned. He names Himself as pure being and faithful presence, and centuries later Jesus' repeated 'I am' sayings deliberately reach back to this moment.
