The cultural key
The letter's fight is with teachers demanding Gentile converts be circumcised. Paul's wish has a local landmark behind it: Galatia was heartland of the Cybele cult, whose priests, the galli, ritually castrated themselves in the goddess's honor, a spectacle every Galatian knew. So the taunt lands with precision: if cutting makes holy, why stop halfway; go the whole gallus. It is deliberate, savage satire, aimed at teachers, not at the practice of any person's body.
Recovered meaning
Paul reduces the circumcision party's logic to its absurd local endpoint: knife-religion belongs to Cybele's priests, not to the gospel. The crudeness is the argument; grace does not run on subtraction of flesh.
