The cultural key
Melchizedek appears from nowhere and vanishes just as fast, a king who is also a priest of 'God Most High' (El Elyon), centuries before Israel's priesthood existed. His name means 'king of righteousness' and his city, Salem, carries the root of shalom, 'peace.' He blesses Abram and receives a tenth from him, a tithe paid before any law required it. Because he is a priest-king outside the line of Aaron, with no genealogy given, later Scripture makes him a template for a different kind of priesthood.
Recovered meaning
A righteous priest-king of peace, older than the Law and outside the Levite line, blesses Abram with bread and wine. The New Testament seizes on him as the pattern for a priesthood that does not run through Aaron at all.
