The cultural key
Ancient law and instinct held that innocent blood, once shed, was not silent: it 'cried out' for justice and polluted the land until answered, and the nearest kinsman was bound to act as avenger. The Hebrew is literally 'bloods' (plural), which the tradition took to mean not just Abel but all the unborn lives cut off with him. The ground that opened to drink the blood now becomes a witness against the killer, which is why Cain's punishment is exile from that very soil.

Murder is not a private act that stays buried. Abel's blood becomes a voice, and the earth itself testifies; the first death cries from the ground for a justice only God can answer.
