The stadium picture is real (the runner strips off every weight; athletes ran stripped to nothing precisely to carry nothing), but 'witnesses' (martyres) says more than 'spectators.' The word means those who testify, and the crowd in view is the chapter 11 roster just recited: Abel, Abraham, Rahab, the tortured and sawn-in-two, people who bore witness by faith, many with their lives; the word was already on its way to meaning 'martyr.' They surround the track not as fans but as evidence.
