The cultural key
It replays Jacob's dream at Bethel: a ladder set up on earth reaching heaven, 'the angels of God ascending and descending on it,' and Jacob's verdict, 'this is the gate of heaven' (Genesis 28:12–17). Jesus swaps himself in for the ladder. The audience matters: he says it to Nathanael, whom he has just greeted as 'an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit,' a wink at Jacob (renamed Israel), whose calling card was deceit.
Recovered meaning
To an Israelite without Jacob's guile, Jesus promises Jacob's vision with a new center: he himself is the ladder, the traffic point between heaven and earth, the gate of heaven standing in a field in Galilee.
