Jezebel knows exactly who Jehu is; 'Zimri' is a barb. Two generations earlier a chariot commander named Zimri had murdered his king, seized the throne, and lasted just seven days before the army turned on him and he burned himself alive in the palace (1 Kings 16:9-18). By greeting the rebelling Jehu as 'Zimri,' Jezebel brands him a regicide whose coup will collapse within the week, defiant contempt from a queen who knows she is about to die. The insult depends entirely on a piece of recent history a modern reader has no reason to know, which turns her strange greeting into a sharp, knowing taunt.
