The cultural key
A pointed reuse of Isaiah 14:13–15, the taunt-song over the king of Babylon: 'You said in your heart, I will ascend to heaven… but you are brought down to Sheol.' Jesus aims the empire-toppling taunt at Capernaum, his own adopted hometown and ministry base, a modest fishing town.
Recovered meaning
Capernaum's privilege, hosting the kingdom's headquarters, bred Babylon-scale presumption. The town most exposed to the light gets the oracle once reserved for the world's proudest tyrant.
