The cultural key
Peter is being generous: the traditional teaching held that forgiving three times sufficed. His 'seven' more than doubles it. Jesus' answer reaches back to Genesis 4:24 and Lamech's boast of escalating vengeance: 'If Cain's revenge is sevenfold, then Lamech's is seventy-sevenfold.' Jesus takes the ancient formula of unlimited revenge and flips its sign. Luke's version compresses the count (seven times in a single day) and adds the turning: the offender keeps coming back saying 'I repent.' The apostles' response is the only sane one: 'Increase our faith!'
Recovered meaning
Lamech's arithmetic of vengeance becomes the arithmetic of mercy: a number chosen to be uncountable in practice. If you're still keeping the tally, you've missed it.
