Many first-century Jews held that the merit of the patriarchs (zekhut avot) secured covenant standing for their descendants: Abraham's faithfulness as a kind of family trust fund. John's retort likely puns in Aramaic/Hebrew: banim (sons) from abanim (stones). Luke's phrasing, 'do not begin to say,' cuts the excuse off before it starts, and he leads with the demand: fruits in keeping with repentance.
Recovered meaning
Covenant standing cannot be inherited like property. God can make a new family from rocks; what counts is the fruit of a changed life.
