The cultural key
A live wordplay on the trade of the men standing in front of him; Peter and Andrew were casting nets as he spoke. It also flips a prophetic image: in Jeremiah 16:16, God sends 'fishers' to catch people for judgment. Jesus reverses the catch: gathering people for rescue, not wrath. Rabbis waited for students to apply; Jesus summons his own, and that directness was itself striking. Luke's verb is zogreo, to capture alive, used of taking prisoners rather than killing them. The wordplay improves the trade: fish die when caught; these catches live. Luke also stages the call after the miraculous haul that swamps two boats, so the fisherman is recruited at the moment his old trade has just been maximally rewarded.
Recovered meaning
'Your skills are coming with you, repurposed: you'll gather people into the kingdom.' A call that dignifies their trade while completely redirecting it.
