'Heaven' here is a reverent substitute for 'God.' Devout Jews avoided speaking God's name casually, saying 'heaven' instead (compare our 'Heaven help us'). Matthew, writing for Jewish readers, uses 'kingdom of heaven' where Mark and Luke write 'kingdom of God'; the phrases are identical in meaning. 'Kingdom' means active reign, not territory. Mark's wording, 'kingdom of God,' is almost certainly the original phrasing; Matthew's 'kingdom of heaven' is the reverent substitution. Mark also adds a clock: 'the time is fulfilled,' the long wait announced by the prophets declared over.

'God's rule is breaking in, right now.' It announces a present arrival, not an afterlife destination.
