The cultural key
A village roof was flat and homemade: wooden beams overlaid with branches and packed mud or clay, resurfaced every year before the rains, reached by an outside staircase. Mark's Greek is vivid and doubled: they 'unroofed the roof' and 'dug through' it. Repairing the hole was a few days' work with materials at hand. Luke, writing for city readers, converts it to tiles.
Recovered meaning
Four men strip a roof with their hands rather than wait their turn. When Mark says Jesus 'saw their faith,' this is what faith looks like in the story: not a feeling, but a hole dug through a roof.
