Horrifyingly literal self-mutilation.
The cultural key
Deliberate hyperbole in the vein of rabbinic exaggeration: vivid overstatement to force a point. The tell: the teaching doesn't actually work literally (a blind man can still lust; the sin's source is the heart, as Jesus says elsewhere, Matthew 15:19). No early Christian community practiced it. Mark runs the full triple (hand, foot, eye) and grades the stakes each time: enter life maimed, or keep the member and lose the whole.
Recovered meaning
Treat sin surgically: whatever feeds it, however valued, however much a part of you it feels, must go, and go drastically. Amputation-level seriousness, not amputation.
