“Everyone will be salted with fire”

The cultural key
Honest label: this is a disputed saying. The strongest key is Leviticus 2:13, which required every sacrifice to be seasoned with 'the salt of the covenant.' On that reading, disciples are living sacrifices, and the fire of trial is the salting that seasons and preserves them rather than destroying them. A second layer: sharing salt at table was a recognized bond ('a covenant of salt' means an unbreakable pact), so 'have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another' asks the quarreling disciples (they had just argued over who was greatest) to keep covenant loyalty with each other.
Recovered meaning
Most likely: every disciple will pass through fire, and that fire functions like the altar's salt, purifying and preserving what it touches. So keep the salt of covenant fellowship among yourselves. Held with an open hand; the site's Interpretation tag exists for verses like this one.
