“Resolved to divorce her quietly”
Matthew 1:19
Legal referenceSettledNarrator
Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and was unwilling to disgrace her publicly, he resolved to divorce her quietly. (Matthew 1:19 BSB)
What it sounds like today
Confusing: why would Joseph need a divorce when they were only engaged?
The cultural key
Jewish betrothal (erusin) was legally binding marriage: the couple were husband and wife in law, though not yet living together. Ending it required a formal divorce, and suspected unfaithfulness could be exposed in a public proceeding. 'Quietly' meant a private divorce before two witnesses, sparing Mary public disgrace.
Recovered meaning
Joseph, legally wronged (as he thought), chose the most merciful option the law allowed. 'Righteous' here includes compassion, not just correctness.
