The cultural key
Spoken before the crucifixion, this landed with brutal clarity. Rome crucified thousands of rebels in living memory; after the revolt around 4 BC, Varus crucified two thousand near Sepphoris, an hour's walk from Nazareth; Jesus likely grew up with that story. The condemned carried the crossbeam (patibulum) through jeering streets to the execution site: a one-way public march of total social death.

Not chronic inconvenience but a death march: following him means shouldering, in advance, the world's verdict of condemnation, walking as one already dead to every claim this life makes.
