The cultural key
Village children played 'wedding' (flute, dancing) and 'funeral' (dirge, wailing), the two great public dramas they watched adults perform. The picture is a group of playmates who refuse both games and sulk. Jesus applies it: John came fasting and austere, a dirge, and they said 'he has a demon'; the Son of Man came feasting, a flute, and they said 'a glutton and a drunkard.'
Recovered meaning
A generation determined to be unsatisfied will find grounds against any messenger God sends. The problem isn't the tune; it's the refusal to play.
