The cultural key
The net is the sagēnē, the great dragnet, drawn between boats or hauled to shore, sweeping up everything in its path indiscriminately. The sorting on the beach was a daily ritual Jesus' fishermen disciples had performed thousands of times: keepers into containers, and out go the unclean species: no fins or scales, no sale (Leviticus 11:9–12). The Sea of Galilee's biggest fish, the catfish, was itself unclean: an impressive catch worth nothing.
Recovered meaning
The kingdom's net sweeps in everything without checking credentials first; the sorting comes later, on the shore, and it isn't the fishermen's timing. A companion to the wheat and weeds: mixed catch now, separation at the end.
