The cultural key
These were gifts fit for royalty in ancient Near Eastern diplomacy, and they echo Isaiah 60, where the nations stream to Israel's light bearing gold and frankincense. Myrrh was above all a burial spice; the same substance appears at Jesus' death (John 19:39).
Recovered meaning
The gifts proclaim a king honored by the nations and, as many early readers heard, quietly foreshadow that this king's story runs through a tomb.
