The cultural key
Quoting Isaiah 9:1–2. Galilee was ringed by Gentile territory, crisscrossed by trade routes, and sneered at by Judean elites as a half-pagan frontier with a suspect accent (Matthew 26:73). It had been the first region devastated and deported by Assyria, the first to go dark.
Recovered meaning
The Messiah launches his mission not from Jerusalem but from the despised, once-devastated edge: the first land to fall becomes the first to see the great light.
