Public fasting had a recognized costume: ashes, unwashed skin, ungroomed hair, all a visible advertisement of devotion. Oil on the head and a washed face were ordinary, even festive, grooming. Jesus prescribes looking like it's a feast day precisely while fasting.

Make your fast invisible, grooming for a party while you go hungry, so the discipline stays between you and God rather than becoming a performance.
