“A house built on the rock… on the sand”
Matthew 7:24–27
Figure of speechSettledJesus
Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. (Matthew 7:24–27 BSB)
What it sounds like today
Beachfront foolishness: who builds on a beach?
The cultural key
Not ocean sand: the fool builds in a wadi, a dry streambed, flat, sandy, invitingly easy digging through the rainless summer. Galilee's winter rains turn wadis into flash floods in minutes. The wise builder cuts down to bedrock beside it; the difference is invisible in fair weather and total in the storm. Both men hear the words; the only variable is doing.
Recovered meaning
Two lives can look identical until pressure comes; the storm doesn't create the difference, it exposes it. Hearing Jesus' words without acting on them is summer construction in a floodpath.
