The cultural key
'Recline' is precise: formal banquets were eaten lying on couches, propped on the left elbow, the posture of free people at a feast. Behind it stands the messianic banquet of Isaiah 25:6–8, the end-time feast God spreads 'for all peoples.' The shock is the guest list: 'from east and west' means Gentiles, placed on the couches next to the patriarchs themselves.
Recovered meaning
Outsiders will lounge at the family feast as family, while (next verse) some who assumed reserved seats find themselves outside. Spoken right after a Roman soldier's faith.
