The cultural key
The image continues the banquet: inside, a lamplit night feast; 'outer darkness' is simply outside the house, in the dark, ejected. 'Sons of the kingdom' is a Semitic idiom ('sons of X' means those belonging to or destined for X), here the insiders who assumed their seats. Gnashing teeth in Scripture is rage and bitter anguish (Psalm 112:10), not torture apparatus.
Recovered meaning
The horror pictured is exclusion from a feast you were sure was yours: standing in the night outside the windows, furious and grieving. Presumed entitlement is the target.
