The cultural key
Entering a Gentile's house rendered a Jew ritually unclean (see John 18:28, where priests refuse to enter Pilate's headquarters before Passover, and Acts 10:28). The centurion, a Roman officer who could compel almost anything, knows this and spares Jesus the defilement, wagering instead that Jesus' authority works like military command: at a distance, by word alone.
Recovered meaning
A Gentile occupier both honors Jewish scruple and out-believes Israel: he grasps that Jesus' word needs no physical presence. Jesus marvels, and the scene previews the gospel crossing to the nations.
