The cultural key
The 'avenger of blood' is the go'el ha-dam, literally the blood-redeemer, the nearest kinsman whose duty was to answer a relative's murder. Strikingly, it is the same word, go'el, used for the kinsman-redeemer who buys back lost land or family (as Boaz does for Ruth) and even for God as Israel's Redeemer. The one root binds together buying back, rescuing, and avenging: the kinsman restores the family's loss, whether that loss is property, freedom, or a life. Here the Law does not abolish the practice but reins it in, subjecting it to trial and the cities of refuge so that vengeance cannot run unchecked.
Recovered meaning
The blood-avenger and the kinsman-redeemer are the same figure under one Hebrew word: the relative responsible to set right what the family has lost. The Law channels that fierce duty through courts and sanctuary, turning raw vengeance into regulated justice.
