“Neither cold nor hot... because you are lukewarm”

What it sounds like today
The classic reading: God prefers outright hostility (cold) to half-heartedness, which never quite made sense.
The cultural key
Geography fixes it. Laodicea sat between Hierapolis, whose hot springs were prized for healing, and Colossae, whose cold mountain water was prized for drinking. Rich Laodicea had no good water of its own: its supply arrived by aqueduct tepid and mineral-heavy (the calcified pipes survive), the kind of mouthful you spit out. On this reading both 'hot' and 'cold' are good: therapeutic hot, refreshing cold. Lukewarm is not moderate devotion; it is water that does nothing.
Recovered meaning
The rebuke is uselessness, not insufficient fanaticism: be healing water or drinking water, anything but the city's own tepid supply. One of the most misread verses in the Bible comes clear from a map and a pipe.
