The cultural key
A load Ruth can carry in her shawl yet needs help to lift is a substantial amount of grain, and it is not random. Ruth had come to Boaz 'empty,' echoing Naomi's complaint that she returned from Moab empty (1:21). Boaz sends her home carrying a heavy, visible pledge. Many read the gift as a message to Naomi that the matter is as good as settled, and as a deliberate reversal: the household that emptied out now receives the first installment of fullness restored.
Recovered meaning
The grain is a down payment on a promise. Boaz will not send Ruth back to Naomi empty-handed, and the sack of barley is a wordless assurance that emptiness, the book's opening wound, is about to be reversed.
