The cultural key
Nabal literally means 'fool,' but not the harmless kind. In Hebrew wisdom literature the nabal is the morally and spiritually corrupt fool, the brutish, godless man who says in his heart 'there is no God' (Psalm 14:1) and treats others with contempt. Abigail, his shrewd and diplomatic wife, defuses David's murderous anger by openly naming her husband's character: he is exactly what his name says. It is the ancient sense that a name can be destiny, and here Abigail turns the name into a verdict to save her whole household, which she does, while the fool himself soon dies.
