Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 8:3, Moses explaining why God let Israel hunger and fed them manna in the wilderness. All three of Jesus' temptation replies come from Deuteronomy 6–8, Israel's forty-year wilderness test. Jesus, forty days in the wilderness, is deliberately re-living Israel's story, and he passes where Israel failed. Luke's quotation stops at the first clause, without Matthew's 'but by every word that comes from the mouth of God'; the Deuteronomy 8 scene is invoked by its opening line alone.
Recovered meaning
Not a slogan but a scene: the true Son trusts the Father's provision in the desert rather than seizing bread on his own terms.
