“Man shall not live on bread alone”

Matthew 4:4
Cultural referenceSettledJesus
It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.' (Matthew 4:4 BSB)

What it sounds like today

A standalone proverb about spirituality mattering more than food.

The cultural key

Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 8:3, Moses explaining why God let Israel hunger and fed them manna in the wilderness. All three of Jesus' temptation replies come from Deuteronomy 6–8, Israel's forty-year wilderness test. Jesus, forty days in the wilderness, is deliberately re-living Israel's story, and he passes where Israel failed.

Recovered meaning

Not a slogan but a scene: the true Son trusts the Father's provision in the desert rather than seizing bread on his own terms.
